Pac-10 Women’s Basketball | Stanford’s Wiggins delivers in clutch
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Candice Wiggins of No. 7 Stanford was at the free-throw line with a tenth of a second left in Sunday’s game against third-ranked Rutgers.
Wiggins responded by making two free throws to lift Stanford to a 60-58 victory over the Scarlet Knights.
With the scored tied at 58, Essence Carson of Rutgers missed a three-pointer with five seconds left. Stanford grabbed the rebound and the ball ended up in Wiggins’ hands. Epiphanny Prince reached at her 80 feet from the basket, sending Wiggins to the foul line.
Wiggins confidently made both shots.
“Every time I take free throws in practice, I try to simulate it’s a game,” she said.
Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer didn’t want to discuss whether the play was a foul or not.
“The odds of something like that happening are slim to none,” she said. “Especially in our home building.”
Wiggins finished with 19 points. Jayne Appel had 18 points and 13 rebounds for Stanford (2-0).
Prince led Rutgers (0-1) with 21 points and nine rebounds.
